Happy Father's Day — and a Note of Thanks

Last Christmas, two hundred of you showed up in a blizzard to hear my story. You came up afterward, you shared your own families, and you bought every last book in the room. I came to teach and left having learned — that love and hope are still very much alive in this congregation.

So this Father's Day, I wanted to come back to you.

When I was a boy, getting bullied and coming home in tears, my father would let me cry and scream. Then he'd promise me the same thing every night: it will always look better in the morning. Joy cometh in the morning. He was right.

What I didn't know until I wrote Born Lucky is that after he put me to bed, my father went downstairs and sat alone in the dark, certain he was failing, certain no one else understood. He wasn't alone. There is an army of fathers who feel exactly that — and not one of them knows the others are out there.

If there's a father in your life carrying that burden quietly, Born Lucky might let him know he belongs to that army. It's hope for every father of a kid having a hard time -- not just with Autism but ADHD, anxiety, bullying at school and the difficulties growing up. It's my love letter to my dad — and a Father's Day gift for yours.
